DWD Partner With Connectech to Offer Digital Literacy Program

The Department of Workforce Development recently partnered with Connectech Coding, Bermuda’s first technology training centre, to provide job seekers with the opportunity to refresh and develop necessary IT skills to increase their employability.
The Digital Literacy Training Programme provided participants with upskilling and reskilling in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

The week-long course which commenced on January 18th, 2021. It provided eight Bermudians with the opportunity to learn computer basics and receive entry-level training in the Microsoft Office Suite of products including Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook.

The participants learned to format documents in Microsoft Word, draft emails, manage daily tasks using Microsoft Outlook, and create professional and engaging PowerPoint presentations. The group was also challenged to build forms, tables, and input formulas using Microsoft Excel, which they quickly mastered. Overall, the students successfully improved efficiencies in all of the Microsoft Office Programs. During the final session, the focus was on efficient use of the Bermuda Job Board website, which allows job seekers to create profiles and apply for advertised positions.

Before commencing the programme, the average test scores were 38%. By the end of the one-week programme, scores had increased significantly with average test scores of 87%. Upon completion of the programme, participants were presented with certificates of completion and had gained the skills desired by prospective employers.

“I am pleased to see more Bermudians taking steps to upskill which will position them for future job opportunities.”, said the Minister of Labour, Jason Hayward JP, MP, ”This program is one of many run by the Department of Workforce Development designed to build new skill sets and increase Bermudians' employability. Filled with eager Bermudians, the group possessed a strong desire for self-improvement. I hope to see many more take advantage of these opportunities.”

Coral Wells, Executive Director of Connectech explained, “It was a joy to teach this course not only from the technical perspective, but because I was able to provide advice and tips on resume writing, presentations skills and email etiquette. I expressed the need for them to continuously practice using the software to ensure they do not forget what they have learned. I hope this provides these participants with the knowledge to move to the next level in their learning but most importantly provides them with the skills required to obtain employment.”

Persons interested in being considered for upcoming sessions of The Digital Literacy Training Programme should email the Department of Workforce Development at dwd@gov.bm.
