Minister Foggo reopens racial dialogue / consultation

Minister Foggo reopens racial dialogue / consultation

In light of the recent global events taking place regarding race relations and racial inequality, the Minister of Community and Sports, the Hon. Lovitta Foggo, JP, MP, announced that she is re-launching the online consultation on race relations in Bermuda.

The public will recall that on November 29, 2019, Minister Foggo invited the community to visit an online forum to share their views on how “we can better the connections between the races”.

Starting today, the public can once again visit Citizens Forum at forum.gov.bm to offer their feedback on the following questions:

- Do you think that Bermuda’s race relations have gotten better in the past five years?
- What do you believe we can do either individually or as a community that will improve race relations?
- What is the greatest stumbling block to us coming together as Bermudians? and;
- Regarding the historical issues between the black and white communities, what does resolution look like?

Minister Foggo said, “On June 7, I was privileged to join around 7,000 people in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was a proud moment to see Bermudians from all walks of life take a bold and forceful stand against racial injustice and inequality. We joined the global community in saying no to racism.

“During this process, I have listened very carefully to the emotional discussions taking place around race. And I believe that we need to continue to provide opportunities to further the conversation so that we can implement change. So we are re-opening the online race relations consultation initiative so that we can hear from more people.”

Minister Foggo added, “We recognize that for generations, Bermuda’s history has been fraught with tensions, pain and disagreements when it comes to the topics of race, diversity, inclusion and equality. And we want to explore meaningful ways of how we can improve and but better understand our racial connections. I believe that as a community, we must continue to have honest and direct dialogue about this topic.

“I am also renewing my invitation to any group, organisation or individual who is interested in discussing this topic directly with me to please contact the Ministry to arrange a meeting so that we can share an exchange of views.

“We are open to hearing all suggestions and approaches of how we can address this issue. This Government remains committed to addressing our racial divisions. Ultimately, our vision is for a fair and equitable Bermuda that embraces and supports all who calls this island home.”
