The National Police reported this Tuesday that it detained the candidate for the Nicaraguan Presidency , Felix Maradiaga , who is being investigated by the Public Ministry for "inciting foreign interference in internal affairs."

Félix Maradiaga, an academic and activist, was arrested after appearing to testify before the Prosecutor's Office, where they confirmed that they had opened an investigation, so, according to he told reporters, he was prepared for whatever came.

In this way, Félix Maradiaga becomes the third candidate for the Presidency of Nicaragua by the opposition investigated and detained in the absence of five months before the general elections are held, in which the country's president, Sandinista Daniel Ortega, seeks a new reelection.

The first detainee was Cristiana Chamorro, daughter of former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997) and the opposition figure most likely to win the presidential elections next November, and the second was Arturo Cruz, who was ambassador to the United States. of the Government of Ortega between 2007 and 2009.

In a statement, the Police indicated that Félix Maradiaga "is being investigated for carrying out acts that undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, requesting military interventions, organizing with financing from foreign powers to carry out acts of terrorism and destabilization ".

Also for "proposing and managing economic, commercial and financial operations blockades against the country and its institutions, demanding, exalting and applauding the imposition of sanctions against the State of Nicaragua and its citizens, and harming the supreme interests of the nation."

These crimes are contemplated in the Law for the Defense of the Rights of the People to Independence, Sovereignty and Self-Determination for Peace, approved by the National Assembly, with a Sandinista majority, last December.

"The National Police carries out all the pertinent investigative procedures and will refer the person under investigation to the competent authorities for prosecution and determination of criminal responsibilities," he added.

For its part, the Public Ministry said that it cited Félix Maradiaga on Tuesday "for having received a complaint from the Ministry of the Interior" since last Friday, June 4, against the "Fundación Libertad or Fundación para la Libertad" registered on February 26, 2013, represented by the candidate for the Presidency.

The complaint from the Ministry of the Interior against Félix Maradiaga and that NGO is "for having seriously breached their obligations before the regulatory body," the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

"Also for knowing its way of operating by having distorted the aims and objectives for which the Institute for Strategic Studies and Public Policies (Ieepp) had been established," he continued.

"The non-profit regulatory body has carried out an analysis of the Fundación Libertad and has obtained indications that through it and its legal representative illegal activities could be carried out to the detriment of Nicaraguan society and the State of Nicaragua" added.

The Prosecutor's Office said that Félix Maradiaga is also being investigated by the National Police "for having strong indications that he has attacked Nicaraguan society and the rights of the people."

Félix Maradiaga was director of the Ieepp, an organization raided in September 2019 and from which the National Assembly, controlled by the ruling party, withdrew its legal personality.
